Caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the methylxanthine class. It is the world"s most widely consumed psychoactive substance. Unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world.
In 1819, the German chemist Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge isolated relatively pure caffeine for the first time; he called it "Kaffebase" (i.e. a base that exists in coffee).
